Sciatica

Sciatica is one of the common types of pain among Hong Kong people. In fact, sciatica is only a symptom – it can be caused by spine or lumbar spine disorders such as herniated discs, bone spur, and herniated coccyx.

Symptoms

  • Numbness and pain that extends from the hips to the calves or feet.

  • Abnormal sensations such as burning or tingling.

  • A severe herniated disc may directly compress the nearby spinal nerve, causing muscle cramps and weakness in the legs or feet.

Suggestions

Interferential therapy, ultrasound therapy and ice packs can be used to relieve pain. Traction therapy helps to restore normal joint movement and reduce nerve compression; at the same time, chiropractic adjustment can also be performed to help improve spinal loading. To reduce the chance of recurrence, post-treatment exercises will be recommended to strengthen the transversus abdominis muscle and stabilise the lumbar spine.
