Typers of pain - Acute Pain vs Chronic Pain
Acute Pain vs. Chronic Pain
If pain persists beyond three months, it is medically defined as chronic pain.
Chronic pain is a result of long-term fatigue and degenerative changes, thus cannot be relieved.
Chronic pain
People perceive pain differently and the degree of degeneration varies among individual. In general, when degeneration becomes severe, pain will increase and even affect daily life. For example, those who suffered from chronic pain may not be able to walk for a long distance or long time and may have trouble lifting their arms. These difficulties may affect their self-care and mobility, which in the long run, could impose negative impact on their mood and social life, and eventually lead to depression.
Acute pain
Generally refers to pain that occurs due to injury, such as ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during exercise, or fractured bones from a fall, which usually can be healed after a period. However, without proper therapy, acute pain may develop into chronic pain.
